About the role

Carrier is looking for a highly motivated and results driven individual to work with the Commercial Software Engineering team in Charlotte (North Carolina) , to support projects focusing on control software design and development for embedded HVAC systems, Commercial Software products control and monitor HVAC functions such as heating, air conditioning and ventilation for commercial offices, education, health care, government, and data center markets.

We are seeking a versatile Controls Software Developer for our cutting-edge software solutions and support the team through the conceptualization, design, development, testing and validation of control and operational embedded software for our Commercial HVAC systems. The selected individual should possess broad experience in the development of embedded control systems (mostly embedded Linux on touch screen displays), including guiding junior developers and have a track record of working with geographically dispersed development teams.

Responsibilities

As the Controls Software Developer , this individual will support all phases of product development lifecycle, right from requirements gathering phase to product launch. This is a critical position that works closely with product development engineers, software quality assurance, product managers, quality, and field representatives to develop products that fulfill customer, manufacturing, service, and regulatory requirements. Potential candidates should also have an appetite for learning new technologies with the goal of applying them to Carrier’s product offerings.

  • Developing software solutions using Agile methodologies and approaches that satisfy the requirements.

  • Design and implement control algorithms via a rigorous analytical approach using MATLAB/Simulink.

  • Use standard model-based verification tools and infrastructure including model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop simulation to validate the control algorithms.

  • Conduct system analysis, simulation, and optimization to ensure optimal performance. Validate models through experimental data and refine them for accuracy and reliability.

  • Able to verify the control software in lab and support field trials.

  • Manage and resolve technical and programmatic development conflicts among stakeholders impacting the software development team.

  • Manage the installation and configuration of software solutions. Resolve software deployment and integration errors, and document processes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following: Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Controls Engineering.

  • 6+ years of experience in Embedded Software Development.

  • 6+ years of programming experience in object-oriented languages such as C++ or Python or Java.

  • 3+ years of proficiency in using controls simulation tools such as MATLAB or Simulink for control design, verification, and code generation.

  • 3+ years of proficiency in dynamic system simulation of controls and equipment using physics-based or data-driven models.

  • 3+ years experience of working with open-source technology, such as Linux, TensorFlow, or RISC-V, software optimization skills, software security and how to write safer code.

Preferred Qualifications (assets)

  • Knowledge in physics-based modeling and thermodynamics to represent dynamic systems and phenomena.

  • Demonstrated skills in control system algorithm development and implementation into an embedded platform. Knowledge of feedback control theory and application

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Extensive experience in developing, deploying, and integrating software solutions.

  • Possess exceptional troubleshooting skills and be able to assess quickly complex programming applications.

  • Effective communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of modern/nonlinear control techniques (MPC, MIMO)

  • Experience in software design process with both Agile and Waterfall methodologies; test driven development, unit, and functional testing.
